A free, non-sponsored tradition more than a century old with no formal organizer: hundreds (some years thousands) run into Lake Michigan at Bradford Beach at noon on New Year's Day. On Jan 1, 2026 it was 14°F with a 2°F wind chill; the Milwaukee Fire Department staffed the shoreline with divers in cold-water rescue suits and a safety line, and officials warned that the ice shelf at the water's edge makes getting in and out hazardous.
