Frequently Asked Questions
What is there to do in Milwaukee in the winter?
Plenty, indoors and out. Downtown has the Holiday Lights Festival (Nov. 19–Jan. 1), skating at Slice of Ice in Red Arrow Park and on the Olympic oval at the Pettit National Ice Center, plus Bucks, Marquette, Admirals and Wave games. Milwaukee County Parks run 12 free sledding hills and groomed ski trails at Brown Deer and Whitnall. Indoors, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Mitchell Park Domes (80 degrees inside), the Harley-Davidson Museum, Discovery World and the Milwaukee Public Museum's final winter on Wells Street are the headliners, backed by brewery tours, supper clubs, Friday fish fries and historic cocktail lounges.
Is Milwaukee worth visiting in winter?
Yes, especially Thanksgiving through New Year's, when downtown is lit for the Holiday Lights Festival, A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker are on stage and hotel rates drop sharply from summer. January and February are quieter and colder but bring the Boat Show, Winter Gallery Night, Lake Geneva's snow-sculpting championship an hour away, Mitten Fest and the best deals of the year on rooms and restaurants. Pack for the cold and the city is very walkable between heated stops.
How cold does Milwaukee get in January?
January is Milwaukee's coldest month. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Mitchell Airport put the average high at 30.9°F and the average low at 17.2°F, with a daily mean of 24.0°F. December averages 36.1°F/23.0°F and February 34.2°F/20.0°F. Sub-zero mornings happen most winters, and the all-time record low is −26°F. Lake Michigan moderates shoreline temperatures slightly but adds wind.
How much snow does Milwaukee get?
The 1991–2020 normal annual snowfall at Mitchell Airport is about 48.7 inches, and January is the snowiest month at roughly 14.9 inches on average. Snow cover is not guaranteed in any given week, which is why Lapham Peak's snowmaking loop and the area's ski hills with snowmaking are the most reliable bets.
Where can I go sledding in Milwaukee?
Milwaukee County Parks designates 12 sledding hills. Three are lit daily 4:30–8:30 p.m.: Currie Park (3535 N. Mayfair Rd.), Whitnall Park (5879 S. 92nd St.) and Humboldt Park (3000 S. Howell Ave.). Daytime-only hills include Brown Deer, Kletzsch, Wilson Recreation, Greene, Hales Corners, Indigenous Peoples' Park, LaFollette, McCarty and McGovern. All are free and open whenever there is adequate snow cover.
Where can I ski near Milwaukee?
For downhill, the closest hills are Little Switzerland in Slinger (about 40 minutes, with two new quad chairlifts debuting in 2026–27), Sunburst in Kewaskum (also a huge tubing park), Alpine Valley in Elkhorn, Wilmot Mountain on the Illinois line (Epic Pass) and Grand Geneva's Mountain Top in Lake Geneva. For cross-country, Lapham Peak in Delafield has lit trails and snowmaking, the Southern Kettle Moraine has the McMiller and Nordic systems, and Milwaukee County grooms Brown Deer and Whitnall parks after 6 inches of snow. As of early November, 2026–27 opening dates had not been announced; most hills target late November to mid-December.
What indoor activities are there in Milwaukee in winter?
Museums lead: the Milwaukee Art Museum (pay-what-you-wish Thursday nights, kids free), the Milwaukee Public Museum in its final season before moving in 2027, Discovery World, the Harley-Davidson Museum and the Pabst Mansion. The Mitchell Park Domes stay tropical year-round, the Public Market has 19 vendors and seven bars under one roof, and Lakefront Brewery and Best Place run indoor brewery tours. Add Adventure Rock climbing gyms, Up-Down arcade bar, AXE MKE, Potawatomi's restaurants and live music, and the Rep and Ballet's winter seasons.
When is Mitten Fest?
Burnhearts Mitten Fest is traditionally held on a Saturday in early February outside Burnhearts bar at 2599 S. Logan Ave. in Bay View, noon to 8 p.m., with live music, specialty beers and food vendors, collecting donations for Hunger Task Force. The 2026 edition was Saturday, Feb. 7; the 2027 date had not been announced as of early November 2026.
Is the Polar Plunge on Jan. 1?
Yes. Milwaukee's Polar Bear Plunge happens every New Year's Day at Bradford Beach (2400 N. Lincoln Memorial Dr.), with the main group running into Lake Michigan around noon. It is free, has no registration and no official organizer, and Milwaukee Fire Department divers and paramedics stand by. Arrive early for parking and bring a robe and boots.
What are the biggest winter events in Milwaukee in 2026–27?
